from Lawrence, Pub Philosophy Group, Sunday meeting: Piracy

Dear friends,

This Sunday we are discussing: Piracy.

Piracy once used to mean the seizure of ships on the high seas for their cargo. The sort of thing that happens now off the coast of Somalia.

However, today it is closely linked to intellectual property rights. However, the issue is not, as I se it, a question of property ownership. This has been the subject of many philosophical works for the past few centuries. The issue is more what are the ethical issues when we do exercise our rights over what we owe.

For example, how should we deal with products that give their inventor a quasi monopoly? And if certain products also have a social value that puts them in a special ethical category of their own, should society also invest in the development of these products? In the first case we can think of music and in the second case, maybe, medicines.

See you Sunday

Lawrence
