from Lawrence, Pub Philosophy Group, Sunday meeting: Perversions

Dear friends,

This Sunday we are discussing Perversions.

Unfortunately it is not through some perversion that I did not write an essay, just the same old excuse. However, I did have a look at the Wikipedia on the topic, which is surprisingly quite short, and after a spot of thinking I came up with these ideas:

- (Wiki) Perversions are usually associated with sexual or unusual behaviour. There is also a personal and subjective value judgement involved on what is perverse.

- (Me) A lot depends on cultural norms and taboos

- What are the limits, if any, to consent amongst adults.

- Norms, especially in a society, are useful because they help us predict behaviour.

- Perversions are unpredictable behaviours. And can therefore be threatening. Ironically many people do not necessarily have direct experience of perversions. Many of us hear of these behaviours through hearsay.

- But what about the freedom of consenting adults to decide what they want to do? Should society interfere with our private life? And what people want to do in their private life.

- What are the limits? And do we have a duty to care?

- Are people who pursue perverse behaviour seeking new experiences or to deviate from the norm? A sort of challenge to society? What about brain states?

- Are perversions normal/reasonable/rational types of behaviour?

See Sunday and take care
