from Lawrence, Sunday PhiloMadrid meeting: The reasons for changing what we think (or our ideas) + NEWS lunch

Essay by Ruel + We must fix date for the Lunch event

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we are discussing a rather complex subject: The reasons for changing what we think (or
our ideas).

Part of the complexity is due to the nature of beliefs and knowledge. We have no issue of what
beliefs are and what knowledge is; the real question that causes most anxiety is the transformation
of a belief into knowledge. In other words, what is the language difference between "I believe that
X" and "I know X"? And since beliefs are subjective, does that also mean that they are also private?
And therefore how can we convert private events into public events (expressing our opinion) using a
public language? How can we, for example, confirm that the public language we use has any meaning
when we are in effect describing private, and in principle, inaccessible events to others?
Accessible to others so they can confirm that when we say we believe X we do indeed believe X?

And as a consequence, when we change our mind or what we think, would this be a random event (within
a constrained context, in the same way we can choose a random number from 1 to 9)? And what are the
causal processes of arriving from Belief 1 to Belief2, even if we accept that new information might
be available to bring about Beleif2? It still remains that our beliefs, and what we think, are
private events. Could it be that what we think are our own private beliefs, or things we think, are
none other than public events caused by public information entering our, as yet, private brain?

In the meantime Rule has sent us a link to his essay for this Sunday's discussion:

Hi Lawrence. Here is something I wrote which could be relevant for Sunday's topic.

Hasta la vista.

Important NEWS:

This Sunday we will try and set the date for the Lunch at the Segoviano we are trying to organise.
Please send me your opinion on the subject and if you can come.

----Lunch at the Segoviano----
1) Last Sunday we discussed the possibility of organising a lunch at the centro and I asked Encarna
for details. However, we still have to organise the date so you can think about this lunch and find
a gap in your busy diary. I also have a pending appointment at the hospital and won't know the dates
until next week. What is sure is that we start lunch at 3:30pm and then start the meeting as usual.
In the meantime we can think about the menu:
-Starters (frituras variadas), Entrecot o Cochinillo con ensalada, Postre- cafe-bebida. 25 euros per
person.
-Alternative option 1: fish or vegetarian but you will have to speak to Encarna about this, I've got
her number so please ask me or her when you come to the meeting. 25 euros per person
-Alternative option 2: cochido completo (plus the extras above) 20 euros per person.
(Looking at the menu you might think this is a challenge to this week's subject, but I am assured
that the food is very good!!!)
