from Lawrence, Pub Philosophy Group, Sunday meeting: How does will affect destiny?

Dear friends,

This Sunday we are discussing, How does will affect destiny?

I'm sorry I could not write an essay, but I was thinking about the
subject all week, but for some reason I could not progress beyond the
following idea:

The only thing we can come close to describe as destiny is of course
death. This is the fact that we are going to die. Now if we accept this
as a solid case of destiny then surely if our will can affect destiny
then we would surely choose to prolong the time of our demise as much as
possible. I would if I could.

Of course, we cannot do this, or at least not that I know of a way to do
it. Which means that either their is no destiny or our will cannot
affect destiny. But even we take the opposite argument, ie we can choose
our demise. That is, we can will when we die and therefore our will can
affect destiny. But this is a false argument, since our "destiny" to die
was set in advance before we could even imagine that we had a will. I
mean, do you remember willing when to die at the age of twenty hours on
this earth? I thought so. Which also means that our will cannot affect
destiny, or at least the one that matters.

Take care
